Dire Straits – Where do you think you’re going – spontaneous cover on acoustic guitar

Today I was jamming a bit on the acoustic guitar and still had the camcorder ready from the last video yesterday, so I simply let it run a bit and recorded this sponatneous version of Dire Straits’ “Where do you think you’re going”. If you wonder about the sound or even about the string bending on the acoustic – check out this old blog post about the string gauge on this guitar.

I always find that playing at low volume leaves you more room to get louder when necessary and causes a much nicer guitar sound. Unfortunately you get some noise when recording with the built-in camcorder microphone as it turns up the record level automatically and catches more noise from the cheap mic pre-amp in the camcorder. The camcorder compresses the dynamics, and youtube compresses again I think, so you will lose much of the dynamics anyway but still it makes a big difference I think.

  1. Hi Ingo,
    nice playing
    I wonder, what are the 4th and 5th chords (e.g at 0:12) ?
I alwasy thought it was E7, but it seems your are playing another one. Em ?
    thanks

by the way, did you read the discussion about Mark’s song key on Markintime forum ?
really interesting…. (I just read on AMIT, don’t post)

  2. Esus4?

Any chance of a study on “Smooching” Ingo?
The pretty bit in the middle, where there’s all sorts of 13ths, flattened 5ths and 9ths!! Lol

  3. I play E7 first, then E7/4 (0 – 2 – 0 – 2 – 0 – 0. from low to high strings). I have not verified if that is what he really did, it just reminded me more of something I heard on some version of the song, more than the Esus4 (0 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 0 – 0. from low to high strings) that some song books suggest, also it is more comfortable to play.

  4. Hi Ingo. I agree with Fletch. The smooching bit is delicious. A study from yours would be fantastic. What do you say? Keep the great work comming!

  5. I know that live, Mark played the whole song with fingers on the strat, but what do you think about the acoustic part on the studio version ?

When I listen to tit, I sometimes think that he used a pick for the acoustic part, to get this “heavy” acoustic tone, on the lower string, and strong E7 chord.

But I’m not sure. What do you think ?
